Is there much to do in Paris around Christmas / New Years or does a lot of stuff shut down or have limited hours for the holidays?

Hi, Yes there is! the city is beautiful with all illuminations, and usually a lot of shops are even open on Sundays (up to Xmas anyway) which is not usually the case. No change to usual opening hours to my knowledge!

New Years Eve in Paris is great! The Eiffel tower and Arc de Triomphe are beautifully illuminated and the surroundings are packed with happy people partying. It was the best time i've had in that city. :)

Yes, I second these answers. My best new years and christmas so far was at the turn of the millenium in Paris. Great parades at Champs Elysee and lots of people. Everything is decorated and lit up nicely. Metros can be a bit crowded though especially late in the evening.

If the main beach is crowded, head south on Midnight Pass to Turtle Beach for a quieter area.
