In Riga there's no need to even think about getting a cab. The place may seem huge, but the city center (both old and new) is actually quite compact. Rather take a tram and head to the suburbs to see the 'ugly' side of Riga. Although most of the natives live in the city, be sure not to miss the surroundings. If you're not interested in making the obvious choice (Jürmala) you might want to try Sigulda or Turaida instead. Or if you're tired of the Latvians, reasonably prised busses operate to Vilnius several times a day.

True! The trams are excellent for sightseeing this capital city. For longer journeys to the surroundings, trains are the best. And even though Jürmala is one the obvious choices, I'd say it's still worth a visit. :)

Great tip! How long did it take for you to climb there with your 4-year old?
I think one of the best things about Saana is that it's peak is easily reachable, even with a kid :) We had our 4-year old with us and she made it just fine (with a little help of course ;)) Climbed there in the beginning of June 2007, it was really warm (+20-->) but still a lot of snow. Great views, great experience!

It's a nice reminder of how things used to be in Berlin but as a sight it's not that special. The neighborhood is still nice (at least for having a cup of coffee/shopping) so just passing by it is not a bad idea. Wouldn't waste my time for trying to find it though. (Nor would I spend over 12€ to get in to the checkpoint charlie museum)
Perhaps I missed something here but to me a small shack and a crash test dummy wearing a uniform between the lanes wasn't that cool.
