What is Ruissalo?

An island in the Archipelago Sea and a district of the city of Turku, Finland. The island is located to the south-west of the city, between Hirvensalo and Pansio in the mainland. One of the largest old oak forests in Finland is situated in the island and many parts of it are included in nature conservation programs. In the westernmost part of the island there is a spa and a camping area. Turku golf course is situated also here. The Botanical garden of University of Turku is situated in the middle of the island. Near the southern tip of the western part of the island is a small, unofficial nude beach. The island is probably most famous as the venue of the annual rock festival Ruisrock. Paavo Nurmi Marathon route goes through Ruissalo.

What People Are Saying

Stefan

Stefan from Amsterdam, Netherlands loves to see the hotels and prices on a map

I love to see the available hotels on the map. I move and zoom the map a lot. It's so easy to filter out the hotels that are too far from my preferred location. I also like seeing the hotel prices at a glance on the map markers.

This hotel booking tool has saved me both a lot of time and money.

Anna

Anna from St. Petersburg, Russia thinks the budget tools and prices are great

Thanks for a cool new way of booking hotels! On our family trips, we are used to filter the hotels based on our budget. Now we can quickly see the hotels that offer the best deals and that are conveniently located close by the most interesting sights.

The prices on TripSay are always great.

Juan

Juan from Barcelona, Spain recommends this site to travelers who know what they want

I found a hotel quickly using the advanced filters. Booking the hotel was easy and straight-forward.

I require a wi-fi, non-smoking room and location near the airport or main railway station. Finally it's easy to find a hotel that suits me. I recommend this tool to other travelers as well.

If you have seen enough chain hotels, try Hotel Amandis next time you visit Naantali. Right in the heart of everything, a bit shabby rooms (kitchenette in every room!) but wonderful easy going staff and a marina view from own terrace. You can either cook your own breakfast in room or buy it from the hotels restaurant (small buffet breakfast). Mind you, the parking is bit difficult in old Naantali - Amandis has it's own parking lot in inner court but it's very small. In principle there is enough room for car / room.

The nature reserve place Ruissalo is the place where you can find beautiful and calming nature. There are numerous hiking paths and also smaller paths where you can wonder through the forrest. On the end of Ruissalo there is a camping place with beach. What you should remember, is that the water is actually the sea. So even during the summer time the water can be chilly. But of cource, since this is Finland, people tend to do some strange things.. Swimming in the sea in the winter is quite common. Saaronniemen Saukot (Saaronniemi=place, saukot=otters) is a "club" where you can try this. It costs about 2,5 euros to enjoy the extremely warm sauna and reaaally cold sea water :) This place is in the beginning of the island of Ruissalo and there is a sign pointing to Saaronniemen Saukot. http://www.saaronniemensaukot.fi/

Small, warm hotel with great view to marina. Nothing like your typical chain hotels - works for both families and couples.

Festivals are always festival and especially in Finland it means people get drunk. If you ignore that (:P) you can find out that in Ruisrock people are more merrier and more social than an usual Finnish person. People gather to Turku from all around Finland and Ruisrock is a great place for meeting new friends. Atleast I always do so :D

This year 2008 can be the last year we are celebrating Ruisrock on the Awesome Island of Ruissalo. Some environmental activists have been complaining about the noise and stuff for years now, but this particular year they have bigger weapons than ever. So do we - Apocalyptica, HIM and Nightwish!

Literally breath-taking place in Ruissalo is Outori's beach where you can go ice-swimming in winter! The address is Tammirannantie 39 and of course there is also sauna. If you go there once it costs 3 euros. The sauna is warm on tuesday and thursday evenings.

The archipelago of Taivassalo can be breath-taking especially in summer time. The roads go here and there like in the middle of the sea. Imagine a warm and sunny summer day (yes, sometimes there are those in Finland!) and you're chillin on the beach and the waves wet your feet... Well, maybe it can happen if you rent your own cottage :D But anyhow, the views are relaxing.

According to local joke, Raisio is the biggest traffic lights in Finland which has official city position. Fast-growing, medium-sized city without anything special to offer for travelers. Check out neighbors Turku and Naantali.

Today when I was visiting Finland I saw beautiful sail ships in Korppoo. It was the Tall Ship Race 09. I was watching the ships near the ferries.
