I lived and worked in Bogota for two years. It has gone through its ups and downs as for safety for tourist (especially non-Spanish Speaking). Now it is back to the good days. You can travel cheaply and safely in most of Colombia. I especially like Bogota because I lean towards metropolitan areas with a history. Try going to the monastery for Dinner. It is a great place to see the sunset and have some of their wine (they serve it warm). Remember - drink a lot of water you are pretty high up.
