What is Sea-to-Sky Highway
Highway 99, also known as the Sea to Sky Highway, or in its southern reaches the Squamish Highway and/or Whistler Highway, is the major north-south artery running through the Greater Vancouver area of British Columbia from the US border and beyond up Howe Sound through the Sea to Sky Country to Lillooet and connecting to British Columbia provincial highway 97 just north of Cache Creek. The number of this highway is derived from the old U.S. Highway 99, which the highway originally connected with at the Canada-U.S. boundary. The highway currently connects with Interstate 5 at the international border.
The "Sea to Sky Highway" section of Highway 99 has a checkered history. Built on a steep cliff overlooking Howe Sound, it was a two-lane undivided highway with no outside barrier. Many motorists have lost their lives on it due to inclement weather, poor visibility, speeding, passing slower vehicles, or drunk driving. (Local media have called it variously the "Killer Highway", the "Highway of Death", and the "Drive-to-Die Highway".)

From Vancouver (sea) to Whistler (sky). The road goes winding along the coast line and the scenery is just magnificient! The snow covered tops of mountains create a stunning contrast to the blue and grey ocean. The are a few sightseeing places just next to the road. It is definitely worth stopping at least once or twice.
The 120km takes some time to drive because of the multiple construction work sites. On the other hand, the slow 50km/h speed doesn't matter that much as the scenery is so good. The roadworks will hopefully be finished by the 2010 when the Winter Olympics take place.

Brackendale describes itself as the "eagle capital of the world". There supposedly are many bald head eagles in the area with a good chance to see them from the viewing area at the river. We didn't see an eagle though. I guess it takes more than just popping in at the viewing area for a few minutes... :-) The town is not worth stopping otherwise but hey, a chance to see an eagle is always worth a stop!
