What is Saimaa Canal
The Saimaa Canal is a canal that connects lake Saimaa with the Gulf of Finland near Vyborg, Russia. The canal was built from 1845 to 1856. In the Moscow Peace Treaty of 1940, the city of Vyborg was ceded to the Soviet Union, thus effectively splitting the canal in half and ending all traffic.
The canal was modernized in the 1960's. Finland pays rent for the Russian parts of the canal. The current hire contract expires on 2013, and Finland is currently trying to start negotiating extension to the contract.

I've never stayed here but have had lunch in the beautiful salon. The building is very beautiful all around and perhaps one of the two good things about Imatra. The other one is the Imatra Dam.
