If you have kids, take them to Linnanmäki! The Sea Life is amusing for the whole family and the rides are really not that bad.

Suomenlinna has some great parks for recreation. Buy some food and wine and go there for a picnic in the summer. Lots of locals there too!

Nuuksio is a very nice national park close to Helsinki. Nuuksio is highland and there are a lot of small lakes and some (easy to reach) hiking routes. Definitely worth visiting during the summer time. You can get there from Helsinki even using public transportation!

Perhaps the word "party" does not exactly discribe this restaurant. Anyway, it's a restaurant which opened it's doors very recently. It's a sort of Finnish interpretation of German beer-house with authentically clad waitresses and live Finnish/German music to pick up your drinking spirit!

Not to be missed. The largest department store in Northern Europe and was listed to the top-ten in the world by NY Times in terms of quality.
Everything from fashion to food & souvenirs. A couple of times a year they organize a sale called 'hullut päivät' (Finnish for 'Crazy Days') with very good offers. You can't really miss it, since they decorate the entire place with tacky yellow plastic ghosts and other crap (www.hullutpaivat.com).

The Best Thai-take-away-place in Helsinki. Cheap and good sized portions, with authentic food by (at least partly) authentic cooks. Meal prices 6-8,50e. Fast and delicious.

There are lots of big malls around the town. In centre you can find about anything from Forum or Kamppi. There's also couple of smaller ones downtown - Kämp and Kluuvi.

Absolutely the best thai-restaurant in Helsinki. Very good value for money!

If you want to have a taste of wildlife but don't want to leave the Helsinki area then try out Nuuksio. It's not really wild but still it's a quite nice national park close to Helsinki.

Helsinki Samba Carnaval 6th to 8th June 2008 - a Rio-style carnival parade and latin clubs with live samba.

Take a tram 3T or 3B and ride the whole circle (actually 8-form). You'll see most of Helsinki for a very small price.

A laid back bar with a design-esque school cafeteria like interior: Very chic! Crowd consists of the Helsinki hipsters and freelance types leeching off the local WiFi networks, so be prepared to find the grown up ex-skateboarders in AA hoodies and skinny jeans. One of the few places in Helsinki where the volume level does not shoot up automatically to annoy the hell out of you. Great Club Sandwich. Definitely worth a visit and a mellow chat over a beer or two.

The perfect place to have a picnic during the warm summer months! The young and the used-to-be-young people gather here to enjoy the sun, which in this fine place shines well into the night, thanks to its fortunate, sunset facing geography. Can get really busy during good weather.

Easily the most stylish restaurant in Helsinki. This elegant place is favored by artists, politicians and the intelligentsia in Helsinki.
The restaurant was founded in 1924. Its interior was designed by world renowned Alvar Aalto.
My personal favorite dish there is Wienershnitzel, which is just about perfect.

Seurasaari is a nice place in the summer. It's a nice park area very close to Helsinki city center. You can swim, walk around or lie in the sun.

They make decent chicken pasta 'limonello' here but, alas, use bulk honey marinated chicken from local super market thus cutting the costs and the possible culinary experience short.

Farouge is a decent Libyan restaurant - but as with most place - sadly in here they have risen the prices and cut down on the service after their big success. The original Farouge in Töölö was rocking.

Bali Hai is a cosy 50's style restaurant and a bar. Their Finnish menu is nothing too special but can be recommended for decent value. Can get crowded in lunch time and weekends.

Linnunlaulu bridge over the railroad is a great place to have a break when walking around Töölönlahti. All the trains going to and coming from the central railway station go under the bridge. The surrounding villas are also worth a look.

Café Tin Tin Tango is a versatile place: a cafe, bar, pastry shop, small gallery and a self-service laundry in the back and even a sauna cabin for 6 on reservation. They serve breakfast from morning till past midnight and you can eat a salad or a submarine as lunch. The bar is fully licensed - one person in a table can be drinking wine while others are still grabbing a very late breakfast. Tango playing on the background gives this place the finishing touch that makes it a favorite and living room of locals of all ages.

Italian restaurant La Famiglia is situated in the centre of Helsinki. It´s a cosy, easy-going restaurant, "Little Italy". There is also a bar where you can enjoy a drink before your meal. They serve also lunch.

The place where all the locals gather to sit down and enjoy summer, stop at one of the cafes or just sit down on the lawn and have a picnic.

1st of May it's crowded, bring your own picnic stuff!

Rooms look good, with well thought out details. Better hotel than Klas K (another "design" hotel downtown). The bar downstairs is a good spot to get a cocktail and people watch

They say its one of the best airports in Europe and I would agree. It's clean, everything works and it has some nice shops. Coffee and everything costs much though..

Great food and lots of it. The prices are perhaps in the mid to high end but definitely a great place to try out if you like lebanese food.

Kannunkulma (known as "Kannu") is the most popular nightclub-restaurant nearby Espoon Keskus.

Its quite small, nice and cozy place with inexpensive prices.

Karaoke @ Tuesdays & Sundays, striptease on Wednesdays.

Every weekend young people from all over Espoo are coming to paaaartyyy! So be there ;)

And for smokers: this one of the few nightclubs left that allows you to have your cigarette wherever you wish - instead of leaving your seats and drinks by going outside.

It's a bit worn out but on the other hand one of those places with "staying power" having managed virtually un-changed for it's 15-or-so yrs of existance. Take the Tom Yam soup which comes with toasted dark bread and butter - not very Thai but esxcellent!

Really nice and affordable place. The restaurant is tiny, so make sure to reserve a table in advance.

Luotsikatu is the longest strip of Jugend (German for Art Nouveau) style houses in the world. Among its architects are world renowned Eliel Saarinen, Herman Gesellius and Armas Lindgren, who together designed Luotsikatu 1 (Tallberg house) and 5 (Eol), and Selim A. Lindqvist, who designed Luotsikatu 2 (Aeolus).

Postres lunch menu is reasonably prices (around EUR25) which matches their á la carte list in portion size and quality. The location on Etelä-Esplanadi is excellent. Oh, and they have a Michelin star and they were chosen as the Restaurant of the Year in Finland in 2007.

This new and big mall right in the center can be worth a visit for mainstream shops. Don't expect anything too special though. The underground bus terminal is pretty cool, as far as bus terminals go;)

This is where the everyman goes to have his beer - or two - or make it ten.
The name of the bar comes from the times of economic depression in early nineties when government formed a holding company to buy off commercial banks' then worthless assets in order to save them from bankruptcy.

The legendary Tapiola Garden nightclub. Even the famous skijumper Matti Nykänen has performed here, which tells something about the quality of this place ;)

Ringside is quite an easy course, you have plenty of room to slice on most of the holes with just a few outs. Most of the holes remind me of an airport landing strip. If you like to hit hard with a driver (and who wouldn't?), this is your course. The clubhouse is also good, it's situated on a hill with 9th and 18th hole ending there and you can see them well from the sauna balcony. Burgers are good. Not the most beautiful or intriguing course but it does the job.

The ferry to Suomenlinna travels between Kauppatori and the island several times per day from 6am to 2:20am. Last ferry back from the Suomenlinna departs 2am.

Kiasma hosts an excellent shop that sells art/photography/etc. books and other cool stuff.

A boutique and gallery, where you can buy or just admire the work of young designers/artists.

Kerava is a bit of a joke in Finland. "Keravan kundi" or "Keravan kolli" means literally "a guy from Kerava" but refers to a lower educational level individual, usually violent, drunken and with a loud mouth.
Actually its a sleepy little residential town with very few reasons to visit for a tourist. Probably a much nicer town to live in what its reputation might suggest.

I believe Linnunlaulu Cafe has the best view of all the places in Helsinki where you can get coffee or ice cream. You'll see the Töölö Bay, the sunset, the city further away... But only in the summertime - it's closed most of the year. :/

Very nice summer restaurant close to Helsinki with lovely atmosphere. They have a good private peer for boats, or you can get there with a public ferry.
Open only on summers.
In the same island (south side) there's also a public grilling site etc.

Excellent recort shop for folk, ethnic and jazz music. Good selection of vinyls and CD's. The owner is a known figure in the collector/music scene in Helsinki and a very nice guy.
Digelius has been in operation since 1971 and going stronger than ever. I heartly recommend, even if you have no intention to buy anything - the atmosphere is one of a kind!

Every year at the end of August, the "Isle of Sheep" festival gathers hundreds of young people for traditional dances (Finnish tango, humppa, polka...) in a very relaxed atmosphere.

This church is fully underground, dug in the bedrock. A bit different from your average church. Looks cool from the inside and has nice acoustics.

Helsinki is a real party town, much more so than major European cities. Most c;lubs stay iopen until 4 am, and it is not uncommon to party until that time. In the fall every company organizes a christmas party on one of the weekends and th clubs can be realy full.

Ate here at new year's eve, great atmosphere and good food. The Italian wines were good too.

VPK is a time machine - decor is pretty much authentic 50's to my eye. Plus the ever-present schlager music on the background. Unfortunately the lunch options match the enviroment too well.

Nice Indian restaurant - Nicely furnisehd and great value for money during lunch time. (Packed around noon, so go in early or late for lunch.)

Avoid lunch at Boom. There are lot's of fast food restaurants at Iso Omena that beat eating at Boom by miles. Or visit the nearby pakistani restaurant Peshawar that has excellent pakistani buffet table every day.

If there is anything good to be said about
this restaurant, it's the fact that it has set
the lowest point on the scale of my dining experiences.
Dull, unappealing food in equally unappealing settings,
unless you're into the eighties cruise boats type of furnishings,

Rather go and grab a burger, at least that's "honest" food.

Description says it all, Roskapankki is a place with cheap beer and atmosphere according to it. So if you like to get stuck on the floor due to all the poured beer and don't mind the shards of glass everywhere on the floor, Roskapankki is the place to go for cheap beer in Kallio.

One of the best football fields in southern Finland can be found here!

Excellent "rough-around-the-edges" type of a place with Finnish cuisine and authentic atmosphere. Crowd is a mixture of locals, artists and academic alcoholists. Baltic herring, meatballs and wieneshnitzel are all sure choices.

Very cool building with beautiful study. Admission is free. There's a very nice cafe (in the summer) up stairs/above the main building.

This beautiful 19th Century building houses the best Cafe in Helsinki. Cakes are delicious and the atmosphere is fantastic.
There are lots to do around Tamminiemiemi besides sipping coffee: there's the city art museum next door, former president Kekkonen's museum just around the corner and the beautiful outdoor museum island of Seurasaari nearby.

Fantastic selection of asian food. Dozens of Different types of crab and shrimps; exotic spices etc. Strongly recommend if you need something different for your dinner guests. The address is: Hämeentie 3

This hetero friendly gay bar / night club is an institution in Helsinki's nightlife. There's a sweaty dance floor in the basement, where they play mostly mainstream dance hits, and a very drunken bar on the street level. Don't go if you can't handle very drunk finns.
Lost & Found stays open until 4am every day. Ques can be quite long after midnight.

Design Museum hosts interesting design exhibitions mostly on Finnish design / designers.

This traditional establishment serves Finnish & French cuisine. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere cozy (not too fancy). Many people from the nearby Ministry of Foreign Affairs have lunch here.

Kurk is pretty close to Helsinki and the green fee is not that bad, check out the rates from the link below. You can also buy tickets (pelilippu) from the web quite cheap. The course has its share of forest, water and hills and is a joy to play. If you're a regular and know the course, occasional blind shot over the trees on a dogleg can get you into good position for an eagle.. if you get it right.

Findland's (and whole Scandinavia's?) only 5-star hotel is located by the Esplanadi park in Helsinki city centre. In the summertime there's a terrace with people sipping wine and watching the life in the city. Not my kind of place but some like go and enjoy good service and drinks in the Kämp Club (an open bar on the 2nd floor).

To me, Savoy is a theater and a stage of many interesting performs. The gigs, movies and plays I've seen in Savoy haven't been mainstream which is a bit surprising considering Savoy's long history: it's great that a place with history still keeps making new things and doesn't rely on its glorious past only. Eating at the famous restaurant under the same name is still on my to do list.

Vegemesta is a vegan/vegetarian fast food joint. They sell hamburgers with soy beefs & such for 4-6 euros, but also falafel. It works both as lunch & night snack place. They don't have alcohol license, but they are situated in Kallio on a street famous for cheap pubs.

Part of Nuuksio natural park, Luukki offers several small lakes and some tens of kilometres well kept trails and tracks in varied forest nature. An excellent place to take outdoor exercises all year round, about 30 minutes by bus from Helsinki.

The best (and only) opera house in Helsinki. Its central location provides easy access by public transportation although there's plenty of parking space nearby as well.

Kivenlahti Rock is a summer starter! It is conveniently located within easy reach from the capital area and as such makes it easy to try out if one is up to yet another festival summer. ;-) This festival is not huge nor full of international top artists - instead it has a village-like friendly atmosphere (although the after-party clubs may not be the best places to after the gigs).

This is what makes Helsinki so cool:
Lammassaari (Finnish for Lamb Island) is in the city but at the same time 1000 miles away. It's an island, nature preservation area and a popular bird watching spot. You'll need your hiking- or rubber - boots as the only way to get there is by dock boards.
Essential thing to do in Helsinki - in my opinion. Helps you to appreciate our great city much more.

Haltiala is the north most part of Central Park in Helsinki. There is a large forested area, vast areas of cultivated land, and the Haltiala farm with cows, in summertime also sheeps, pigs, and some other animals. Also a nice cafe to stay for a while and to feel like being in 100% countryside.

Do not expect to see below you a typical urban area with one million people. Instead, you will find endless green forests. This is metropolis in a Finnish style.

Want to see a fall in the middle of Helsinki? This old dump is now a piece of interesting landscape, bare hill with stubs, rocks and low shrub. Material for all this is from a couple of islands which got buried under new port.

A great place to come and watch both nature and the new harbour.

One of the best places near Helsinki to play tennis, badminton, squash and go to the gym.

A great place to stop for some italian food in a refreshingly authentic decor. Perhaps not the place to go for a long dinner, but a great alternative to just grabbing some pizza/bread/whatever from one of those fast food franchises nearby.

Cafe Mellsten is the meeting point for everyone nearby in Haukilahti, it's a great place to start your day during weekends. Relax in the sun on the terrace and enjoy home made cinnamon buns while looking at the sea and listening to waves hitting the shore. A cup of coffee or beer depending on your activities last night top the enjoyment.

Suomenlinna is one of Unesco´s World Heritage site and it´s one district of Helsinki. There goes a ferry from main market square to Suomenlinna many times a day. During summer time it´s a very popular picnic place. Grab your friends with you and buy some food and go to Suomenlinna to enjoy it´s unique atmosphere. It´s very much worth of visiting, actually must- see-thing in Helsinki.

This is a small Italian restaurant situated in the 1st floor of Kamppi shopping centre. It´s almost all the time full, but people don´t sit there for ages, so you get a table after short time queueing. Pastas are very delicious, but try also other food.

If you are wondering when to visit Helsinki, visit during the summer. Winter is dark, cold, wet and long. Not that there won't be some occasional extremely nice winter days with snow, but generally you should aim for the summer unless you are a definite winter fan.

If you have an iPhone, you can get the free eat.fi application which recommends you great eating places nearby based on your GPS-position. The interface is in english but most of the content in finnish. However, you can still define for example 'italian' food and get an idea of the rating from the graphical representation. :)

A good place for a picnic in the summer! Quiet but still centrally located and great views as it is on a hill.

Great place to visit in Helsinki during the summer time is the Zoo of Korkeasaari! I was there last summer for the very first time and I was so excited, loved it :D

Great steaks with great pricing! To try, go every day between 16-17 and you get two main courses for the price of one. My favorite was the "Mixed meats skewer" during the old La Bodega-days but I bet there are a lot of equally good alternatives today.

The stadium has a tower where you can climb for a small fee. The view over Helsinki is very nice!

Bodom has a nice beach but the best thing to do is to ride around it with a motorcycle. The roads are narrow and very curvy making it one of the most popular evening ride routes in Espoo.

Linnanmäki is not a very big or exciting amusement park compared to more modern and bigger ones but it has a certain fealing to it that makes it fun to visit. It's a nice place to spend a summer day in.

The stadium was built for the 1952 Olympics. The thing to do is to climb the pretty high tower and get a really nice view over Helsinki.

Can't vouch for the rooms, but definitely set aside some time to have a drink on the rooftop terrace!

If you want to go to night club with good action and older people you go to Kalle. Especially Thursdays and Saturdays are extremely popular. If you want to have fun you won't regret choosing Kalle.

Cool architecture, but I wouldn't spend my time here especially during the night..

The best places fr ear evening drinks with a view are Hotel Torni (Tower) bar, and Loiste.

You'd better have an excellent reason coming here. Like being so drunk that you can't think clearly.

On a clear day, Restaurant Haikaranpesä on top of a water tower offers really nice views over the sea (and Espoo too). Lunch buffet is plentiful but somewhat expensive.

Nice terrace especially in the summertime!

Stay clear of Geronimo unless you want to spend an evening with noisy minors that come here for it's the only place that will sell them beer without identification.

Their 1 liter glasses of beer are still famous amongst Tapiola natives.

Serena is the place to visit if one like water parks. Best in capital area.

Marjaniemi is a subdivision in eastern Helsinki, Finland, in the district of Vartiokylä, and is the home to 1,964 people.

A pub with a wonderful atmosphere and loads of Czech beer. Steer clear from Hadanka on league nights as it's the crowded with supporters of local ice hockey team, HIFK on those evenings.

Karhusaari is located between Helsinki and Porvoo, it's an excellent place to live if you want a bit of quietness, but still be reasonably close to Helsinki center. There are some really nice houses.

Bought a pair of rubber boots 'type Sailing', which only cost me 125e. I guess anything with Sailing is instantly double or triple the price.

A café with an international but very relaxed atmosphere. You can also eat lunch here and most of the meals are vegetarian.

Delicious and affordable Nepalese food.

One of the biggest malls in Finland. In this modern shopping complex you can find whatever you want, if it is not high fashion or hand-made specialties. It also includes restaurants, banks, etc.

Nice hiking grounds for day trips.

Suvisaaristo is nowadays so fully built that it is difficult to find any hiking trails anymore. I know of only one. It's one of my favorite hikes during spring and fall when the coastal nature changes from dead winter to lively summer or vice versa.

Wonderful pub downtown Helsinki with relaxed atmosphere and besides icehockey nights, lot's of free space.

Too bad they serve Fosters from the tap instead of quality beer.

A links style course undergoing massive renovation over a few years, now complete with the customary deep bunkers and hillsides full of heather. The fairways are quite narrow, so yells of "FORE!" are the usual muzak. Windy, but pleasantly so, and something quite different in terms of golfing experience.

Private marina with visitor places as well. All imaginable facilities for sailors, nice people and a good restaurant (Blue Peter) with hearty food and cold beer.

It's a very cool park with lots of tall trees. A good place for a picnic, jogging or just wandering around the forest which is somewhat in natural state.

Beautiful harbor area with cafeterias

If you happen to be a geocacher, there is a cache near the Airport. It's called Helsinki International Airport HEL hotel. From the cachesite you can find a big box, where you can leave your travelbugs and geocoins or take some with you when you'r going abroad. If you are not a geocahers you are probably thinking what the h.... :D Then i suggest you to visit geocaching websites.

They started to build the stadium in 1934 and it took 4 years to get it ready. In 1990-94 they renovated it and now days there are 40 000 seats in stead of 70 000 standing places.

Someone has said that this is the most beautiful olympic stadium in the world. Well, maybe it is, if you compare to the new ugly things, but I would say I have seen more beautiful than this. Still, it's an interesting thing in Finland's history and the tower is nice.

I found the Lush boutique in England and now they have opened shops in Espoo and Helsinki too. They've got really nice soaps and bath balls that dissolves and fizzes in water leaving hearts etc. in your bath water! It's sweet!

Linnanmäki Sea life

Sea life is in the middle of Linnanmäki theme park. You can see sharks, jellyfishes, sea horses andlot more with out leaving Helsinki center. Sea life winter aquarium presents northen sea life for you. Sea life has also quite inclusive shop of products that relate to the sea life theme.

Korkeasaari – Helsinki zoo

Zoo of 150 animal species and 1000 plant species. Zoo is open all year. Snow leopards are my favorit animals at zoo. Korkeasaari shop sells unique decoration from Amazon area, with theese products store respects fair trade ideology . Also lot of toys and other things that you can’t find no where else from Finland.

Natural History Museum

Exhibit; history of life, presents for exampel dinosaur. Wide exhibition of finnish wild life, stuffed animals, bird eggs and animal waste! Also story of the bones exhibit, bones are important source of information to many science fields. Museum has also museum boutique, from where you can find lot of interesting stuff. It will take a while, to explore, all the exhibits in this museum.

This shop is situated in the Forum shopping centre, in Helsinki city centre. You find here beautiful jewelleries, bags (quite expensive in my opinion), small purses, some shoes and clothes for children. Check out this shop at sales time. I have found here cheap jewelleries and small purses.

Remember to try out one of the steaks, they have several in the menu and they've never let me down so far. They even have steak weeks every now and then.

Check their lunch, amazing quality with a decent price. 30-40€ for 3 courses.

Keila & Minigolf may be the only reason to visit Myyrmäki. They have bowling, mini golf, billiards and beer. The atmosphere is surprisingly nice especially on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays after 5 o'clock in the evening.

A down to earth gym with emphasis on free weights. Easy to walk in if want to train when traveling. No mandatory memberships or yearly invoices or other crap like that. Reasonably priced.
On the flip side the gym is quite small and somewhat dark and doesn't provide the latest equipment. ;-)

The prices are very high (at least when compared against web sites) the but the selection is very good (if you're into non-mainstream movies) and the staff is amazingly knowledgeable.

A nice park close to the center of the city, popular among joggers and such. If you're on a business trip and want to go for a run or a walk, then you could try out running around the Töölö bay.

The food is good and well worth its price. Like any upmarket place, you should really eat both entrées and desserts, otherwise you'll walk away hungry. If you are more than 2 people or visiting during the weekend you need to book ahead. The waiters are young and seem to not know very much about the food or the wines.

Ruoholahti is a nice suburb located near the sea.
There is a subway station and a shopping center with Verkkokauppa.com, (One of) the biggest Electronic store in Finland.

Espoo - the city of Nokia HQ and home of one of the nicest National Parks just 30mins from downtown Helsinki called Nuuksio

You can also practice crosscountry.skiing there if we have snow in southern part of Finland

Interesting and beautiful golf course and if you have not plenty of time take 9-hole Hill-course.Also they have a good restaurant.

Snowy and cold winter time in Helsinki...A lot of people in a hurry and a great variety of places to go for having fun. In general it's nice place, but trully speaking i didn't like it because of i'ts mad life rhythm and crowds of people.

The water park has been repaired after a couple of years' downhill. They also have a new slide called Halfpipe that is guaranteed fun for adults as well. Too bad all the tube slides are outdoors and not in use in the winter.
