Most people seem to like Zagreb, but after visiting the city I honestly have to say, ‘Zagreb is lame’ [sorry folks].
…whatever you do, do not eat “Strukli“…
it tastes just like it looks.
BUT:
With a good companion, even Zagreb turns out to be a jewel, that’s why I have to admit:
WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE ZAGREB !

What is the best way to get around in Croatia - say from Zagreb to Dabrovnik, etc...

I'd recommend taking a bus. The bus transport system in Croatia is extensive and at least some years ago not too expensive at all. The buses are in a good condition and we enjoyed the flexibility... We also considered taking a train but because of the mountains the railroads are scarce. A train across the mountains could be an interesting experience though...
