What is Verona

Verona is a city (pop. ~250000) in north-eastern Italy's Veneto region. Most famous as the setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Though close to the more popular tourist destination of Venice, many people consider Verona a more relaxed and pleasant place to visit. There are many tourists, but the amount of tourists per square meter is lower.

About Verona elsewhere

"Stroll arm-in-arm with your loved one along the streets of Verona and you could be forgiven for believing the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet to be true."

"Gothic house from the 13th century with the famous balcony from Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’."
world66.com

"It wasn't all wine and roses, however -this period was noted for the savage family feuding of which Shakespeare wrote in his famous play, Romeo and Juliet."
lonelyplanet.com

"The tragic story of the love of Romeo and Juliet, which Shakespeare situates in the Verona of the Scala seigniory, makes the city a preferred destination for lovers and tourists seeking emotions."
world66.com

"Arguably, however, the reason behind Verona's thriving tourist industry has less to do with architecture or history than with literature -William Shakespeare's romantic and tragic play about the young lovers Romeo and Juliet is set in the city, and such is the power and resonance of this story that every year a stream of tourists flocks to Verona to visit the famous courtyard and balcony at Casa Giulietta ( Juliet's House )on Via Cappello in the Old Town."

Verona is one my favorite Italian towns. It's a compact town with lots of things to see, from the art gallery in the castle to the amphitheater. Even the Romeo and Juliet's house was quite fun because of all the action and scribbled notes on the wall. And I guess rubbing Juliet's right breast - as per the tradition - has brought me a lot of luck in love.. :-P

If you take the #1 bus from the train station, it will take you to the center of town where the roman ampitheatre and main piazza are.

The tip about the #1 bus going to the city center (centro citta) is true of most Italian cities.

The whole Verona is like made for shopping. Only problem is that you need quite a lot of money, if you want to buy anything! I hade only one day time in Verona and I managed to visit like half of the boutiques. So be prepared with lot of time and lots of money :D
