the cafe before the entrance to the old village is a perfect place to watch the world go by. Food is surprisingly reasonable and good, and the locals play the game of petanque, or boules just outside.

If you are staying in Cannes it is better not to have a car. Parking can be expensive by the day, even at the hotels. I would suggest if you are in Cannes for a few days to use the fabulous train service which can take you along the coast to most of the key towns. And the train ride itself it worth doing for the wonderful sea views.

If you are in town for a couple of days, it is worth taking the ferry from the Port over to the Ille Sainte Marguerite. The ferry only takes 10 to 15 minutes and costs about Euro 11 return. There are two islands to discover, one of them housing a dramatic monastery and the other an old fort that is the place where the Man in the Iron Mask was held.
If you have a little more time, take the scenic trip, which costs the same amount but includes a little boat trip around both islands before dropping you off at Ille Sainte Marguerite so you can have a walk around.
In the summer (June to Sept) the boats operate every 30 mins.

On a windy day, wander around to Palm Beach. This is about a 10 minute walk from the middle of the Croisette (or if you cannot face it then there is an open-top bus that you can take). Once there, you will see the sea littered with para-surfers performing acrobatics for all to watch. A great free show on a Sunday afternoon.

Jouni Törmänen in the kitchen and one Michelin star. Amazing view and very good food. Make sure to book a table next to sea on the balcony.

Provencal cooking. Gastronomic but at a reasonable price. The restaurant is in an old 14 century convent.
