For a taste of hippie San Francisco and the psychedelic era, you much attend a concert at 'The Fillmore' auditorium. The walls are dripping with history as they display concert posters dating from present all the way back to the 1960's. From the hardwood floors to the 14 crystal chandeliers, this is not your ordinary concert hall. It's fairly small place, so if you get there before the opening act begins you can get a spot within arm's reach of the stage. Bands that play there today stand in awe of all the famous names who walked that stage before them. That extra vibe usually ensures an amazing performance.

Alcatraz is a must see place when going to SF. Lots of interesting history. Don't forget to take the audio tour, without that you don't get too much out of the visit.

If you like open-water swimming, be sure to check out the annual "Escape from Alcatraz - 'Sharkfest'" swim in June. Race contestants ride a ferry boat to Alcatraz then jump into the water and swim back to Aquatic Park in San Francisco through some of the coldest and current-driven waters you will find anywhere. The swim is about 1.5 miles--unless you get swept out to sea by the currents.

Ocean Beach is pretty cold and not really for swimming, but if it's not cold there will be bonfires here at night.

A cool place especially if you get a table outside in the courtyard. Food is good too but nothing that special.

Perhaps the best american city that I know. Not too large and very close to excellent places like Lake Tahoe or redwood forests. I wasn't bored during the two weeks spent there and around.

Loved the place. Lots of small cafes and breakfast places. Nice weather at least the time I spent there and for those that are into the startup-life this is probably the best place to be. Lots of activities like hiking and skiing within a short drive.

Featured in the Hitchcock movie Vertigo. Unique spot for a photo under the bridge, but it's not very nice on a cold and wet day!

Even though the city is only 7 x 7 miles, it takes time to get across the city. Public transportation is effective. Cabs can be expensive simply because of the constant stop and go and one way streets.

You always think an aircraft carrier is a big metal clot and floating on water is the last thing you'd expect it to do. When you climb on the deck of USS Hornet you realize it's HUGE. To see everything takes time. There are guided tours for each part eg. engine room, bridge etc. For us war fans the whole visit took about four hours.

I still fancy visiting some contemporary nuke carrier. The Nimitz class for example is almost double the size of this Essex-class. :oO

Try walking end to end of the bridge. It's quite windy and if you have vertigo don't look down. Notice the phones that say "it's not too late, please make the call". They're for the suicide jumpers...

If you want to get a nice view over SF go to Twin Peaks. Otherwise it's nothing special but the view is great.

A tourist trap. Nothing worth seeing here.

If you go to Golden Gate Park, be sure to wander off the beaten path and check out the secret Shakespeare Rose Garden and rent a row boat at Stow Lake.

Behind the tacky T-shirt stands and made-for-tourist attractions you can still see evidence of working fishing boats. But there are so many better places in San Francisco to spend your time and money. Skip this one.

For those of you who are technology geeks, you need to visit South Park Circle to witness the epicenter of the Dot.Com craziness (and now the Web 2.0 craziness). Dozens of start-ups are sprinkled among the apartments and industrial warehouses, the cafes are filled with programmers, and Wired Magazine's offices are around the corner. There is also a bit of San Francisco history to the place: the circle at one time was the location of opulent Victorian-era homes before they were burned down in the 1906 earthquake and fire. Things look a bit rattier now.

Hotel des Arts - If you like a bed, bathroom, closet, desk and free WiFi at affordable prices, this is the place for you. I was at first taken back by the raw interior and an actual door key - not a card. After a day or so adjusting, it really wasn't a bad deal. The nice thing, the final bill. There is probably no place in San Francisco where you can get a room for this cheap. You may read other complaints online about the noise or the construction. I just stayed there in February 2008, and there was none of that. Located on Bush St., you are right there in the heart of the city.

King George Hotel - My first time in the city of San Francisco, I stayed here. The prices were decent and the staff was very nice. Surrounded by all the nice attractions that Union Square offers, it's a really decent deal and sits in the shadows of the more expensive Hyatt or Hilton. It's definitely a place I would stay again, and yes, like most places these days - free wifi - a must!

Everybody knows San Francisco's cable cars, and you owe it to yourself to visit the Cable Car barn and crawl underground to see how they actually work. The entire network of cable cars are powered by just 4 steel cables that snake through the city--and are powered by 4 massive motors with 30' diameter pulleys. This is not a slick, polished tourist museum. This is the original brick building where you can smell the grease and hear the loud hum of the motors. Fascinating!

Instead of battling the traffic jam of cars heading up to see Coit Tower, you can walk up the famous Filbert Steps to get there instead. Start at the bottom of the hill on Battery Street and hike up 500+ steps through hidden gardens and some of the oldest houses in San Francisco. At intersection of Montgomery Street, look for a 1930s Art Deco style apartment building with a cut-out of Humphrey Bogart peering out the window (the building was used in a Bogart film called Dark Passage).

On a fine day head to Coit Tower for a great view of Alcatraz and the bay or the city.

Smiley´s Saloon and hotel is the tops.Coastal Cafe for excellent foods.Bolinas is a gem...if you can find it.

Excellent hotel. Good location, stylish lobby bar and good service. Last time, I left a shirt behind in my room. A phonecall and three days later, it was delivered to me at the other side of the globe. Free of charge. Incredible.

A good club for popular music and a younger crowd is Slide. They have a slide you can ride down to actually get into the club. Usually a line on the weekends, but it goes quickly.

it's the best city in the US. Pretty small, fun and close to different outdoor sports places like Tahoe.

One of the few National Monuments that you can experience for free. Walk the .5 mile long bridge, starting from Fort Point, a civil war-era brick fort in foggy San Francisco, and ending at Fort Baker in sunny Sausalito.

Berkeley is best known for its University and as ground-central for Vietnam War protesters. It's an ugly city with dirty sidewalks and more than its share for crazy people wandering the streets, yet the cafes are packed with vibrant conversations spoken in dozens of different languages. And you'll find people who still wear tie-dye shirt and reminisce about the Grateful Dead and Ken Kesey.

Looking at all the short skirts and hot young people here, it's hard to imagine that this historic bar once hosted the mega-rich San Francisco industrialists in the early 1900s. The Redwood Bar (its original name) is located inside the Clift Hotel and was designed by famous French designer Philip Stark. Get in here before 10:00pm because a line starts to form. If you are a hotel guest or you are eating at the restaurant (Asia de Cuba) you can call ahead and reserve a table.

Food is Asian-fusion. Authentic atmosphere, quality ingredients, cool crowd (be sure to make reservations 2 weeks in advance for Fridays & Saturdays). Try the lemon grass martini. And if you must know, a betelnut is an herb with hallucinogenic properties.

Take an 5-star French restaurant and insert a new Japanese owner and you get El Paseo. This is VERY traditional French dining an an ultra-romantic brick building at the end of a meandering brick garden path. Service is impeccable (as in two servers per table) but without being stuffy. The wine selection is unreal (although unless you understand Japanese, you're not going to understand a word the Sommelier says) and prices are astronomical. But you don't feel ripped off because the food and service is THAT memorable. This is a once-in-a-rare-occasion type of place.

Actually you are near Sausalito when you end that lovely walk. You can continue the walk down Alexander Avenue. Eventually it changes to Bridgeway, where you walk right along the water and can look back a a spectacular, uninterrupted view of the S.F. skyline

Although it's a must see, don't get your hopes too high. It's not great, it's just ok. But if you go, be sure to take the jailhouse audio tour (as if you could miss it)...

We were visiting a friend living in SF and seeing and doing what's worth it in the city and surrounding area. SF is perhaps the best city in the US being small (on the US scale) and close to a broad set of great activities like Lake Tahoe and redwood forests etc.

Must walk across and see the suicide phones. Just fantastically insane.

We went to lunch/dinner many times here. It's just great. Lots of good food with not so bad prices. And the location is great, just on Union Square close to all the shops in case you're going shopping!

The highest peak in SF offering great views over the city. Very touristy but definitely something you got to do once.

We took the audio tour and it was great. Definitely the best tourist sight in SF. It can be windy outside so take a jacket.

The food is not that great (it's good but it's not the reason to make the visit) but otherwise it's a pretty cool restaurant. You can sit outside and watch "foreign" films. Mostly European i.e. non-Hollywood films that is.

Avoid. Just tourists. Nothing else. Well the walruses are pretty cool. For five minutes. The only reason to go here is to buy the tickets to Alcatraz.

The hotel was well attractive and near to the spot places. There some places I was visit are Golden Gate Park, Lincoln Park and some museums I got adventure and great enjoyments that make vacations so remember able.
And other San Francisco Zoo was so adventure activities to see the wild life. At the beaches the many adventure activities that I got there like swimming, fishing, biking and many more. In San Francisco great fun of the nightlife that so adventurous and excited that cant forget it. The city attractions and <a href="http://www.hotelsatanywhere.com/">discount hotels</a> such the great combinations of the vacations days.

Really wonderful, I've never been into such a great city as San Francisco is. It did change my lifestyle with its more than multicultural environments and mixed society. Will go back there for sure!

San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world to visit and also one of the most beautiful cities to live at. There's a lot to do with all the standard postcard icons such as The Golden Gate, Lombard, North Beach, Embarcadero, Mission and Union Square. However, the true jewels of San Francisco are its hidden gems. Apart from running to Sausalito and watching time pass by on weekend afternoons at Dolores Park, my personal favourite place to be at San Francisco on Sunday evenings is The Revolution Cafe on 22nd Street off the Mission and Valencia. Grab a cuppa warm milk, coffee, tea or whatever you fancy and enjoy the finest musicians in the city hobbled by the corner playing classical, jazz and blues. A perfect way to end the weekend and start the new week ahead.
