About Siena elsewhere

"Siena is of great environmental and artistic interest with a wealth of important monuments including: Piazza del Campo, one of the most beautiful medieval squares in whole Italy."
world66.com

"A tradition dating from the Renaissance it takes place in the Piazza del Campo a marvelous shopping plaza in the shape of a half-shell whose circumference is topped on race day with a layer of dirt to create a track."
world66.com

"The race itself runs for three laps of the Piazza del Campo ,the outer course of which is covered with several inches of dirt and the corners of which are protected with padded crash barriers for the occasion."
en.wikipedia.org

"The great thing is the view of Siena -spectacular, as you look across the unobstructed valley and almost down at the Piazza del Campo and Duomo."
wikitravel.org

world66.com

"Piazza del Campo [Il Campo], Siena."
bugbog.com

"Most interesting are the wonderful black-and-white Gothic Duomo (don?t miss the magnificent Bernini statue of Mary Magdalene hidden away in a niche or the dazzling mosaics on the floor), the Palazzo Pubblico (for its impressive frescoes) and the Torre del Mangia you can climb for a nice view over the city."
world66.com

"Palazzo Pubblico (13th-14th century in Gothic style) overlooked by the bold Torre del Mangia (14th century, 102 m. high) and Palazzo Sansedoni (13th-14th century, altered in the 19th century)."
world66.com

"The Palazzo Pubblico ,Siena's City Hall for almost 800 years, contains (amongst many other things) the famous frescos on good and bad government by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, and access to the Torre di Mangia, from whose top you can view a beautiful panorama of the Sienese countryside."
wikitravel.org

"Here you?ll also find the striking Palazzo Pubblico (0577 41169), home of the Museo Civico."
timeout.com

"The café lined Campo with the Tuscan gothic Palazzo Pubblico/Torre del Mangia/Museo Civico, [town hall/Mangia tower/civic museum], the home of marvellous frescoes including "Guidoriccio da Fogliano" and "Maestà" by Simone Martini, and 'the Buongoverno fresco' -the first known artwork with a landscape as subject -by Ambrogio Lorenzetti."
bugbog.com

"By the time he stormed the city in 1555, the marquis had done more damage than even the Black Death -- only 8,000 out of a population of 40,000 had survived -- and the burned and broken city and countryside bore an uncanny resemblance to the Effects of Bad Government, half of Ambrogio Lorenzetti's fresco in Siena's Palazzo Pubblico."

This place is so beautiful and peaceful. I went there in september and there were not too many tourists around. It is not allowed to drive car inside the city walls so it's nice to walk around.

Good place for getting tips on the vinyards in the area. Their tourist info is the best I've ever visited - really helpful and friendly service.
The town itself is nothing special, but a good place to stop for a cup of coffee or to buy a box of Chianti wine.

This half circle shaped sloping medieval square can be the most awesome Campo in the whole Italy. One only needs to walk around this Campo which is a monument as itself and wonder.
