Tijuana, Mexico - or TJ as it's usually known by the locals. Not a bad place to go to - this town right across the border from San Ysidero, CA is like night and day from California. If you are into shopping in a everyday flea market atmosphere, this place you must go at least once in your life.

I rented a board and a wetsuit here. The place is close to the beach, had enough selection, and I got what I wanted with a good price. At least I thought the price was ok: $10 per hour for a board and suit. A shabby looking place, just the way a surf shop should be!

In one word: impressive! We went to see three excellent shows, and I recommend them all. The first and best show featured Sea World's biggest star Shamu the killer whale. The second show was hilarious Risky Rescue with sea lions Seamore and Clyde. The third show we saw was Dolphin Discovery featuring huge jumps about 20 feet high!

_If_ you have a car, the location is good: easy to navigate and fast access to freeways. If you rather move using a taxi or public transport, go somewhere else. We had a car and were happy to find out that it took only some 10 mins to drive to the beaches or Sea World. WiFi: sloooow

A submarine base close to the San Diego city center. Need a permission to get here and while we got the permission, our cab driver didn't. We would have had a long walk ahead of us but out of nowhere came a limousine whose driver waved us to step aboard. There were already other guests for the same occasion and they kindly offered us a ride. Now that's the way to go to a friend's wedding! The setting by the coast with occasional palm trees was beautiful.

A great ocean side beach and a beach boulevard lined with beach houses on the other side. Lot of surfers riding the waves, which were big enough. Most of the guys seemed to be quite good, but I guess that's what you get when you're living 100 meters from the waves in a beach house. Luckily I was able to find a good spot where other beginners where trying to get on the board. I wasn't the only one falling off most of the times. :-) The beach was clean and sand was smooth.

San Diego's pedestrian friendly city center featuring a few blocks of beautiful architecture and low-rising buildings hosting a number of restaurants, bars, clubs and theaters. And, to my astonishment, after the sunset they actually lighted up the gas lamps in some street corners. On a Friday night the place seemed to be bustling with people coming for after-work drinks or - a bit later - having a dinner and more drinks.

A big mall with a lots of shops varying from small clothes boutiques to Macy's and Bloomingdale's. I found what I needed from the food court and the Apple store. The burrito was excellent! Disclaimer: I'm no expert on shopping or malls in general. :-P

An Irish pub showing football. The beer tasted rather good (surprise?!) in the relaxed setting. Even though we didn't experience it personally, our taxi driver commended the excellent atmosphere when there was a game of soccer on screen. He seemed to be so fond of the place that he probably would have come in with us if he hadn't have customers waiting...

gilbert asked a question about Mission Beach 2 years, 8 months ago
where to stay in San Diego?
where to go, sites, etc.?
Best car rental to travel along coast then to Yosmitie National Park. Fly to las Vegas and back to New york.

I think I'd go and stay on one of the beaches. Surfing, playing beach volley and just strolling along the beach was just great. :) The downtown area is not bad either, nice area to walk around.
On our visit we stayed in a hotel on the Hotel Circle (by I8) and it was a good choice. We had a car and it was very quick to drive everywhere from there.
Btw. Sea World was worth a visit, in my opinion.
