What is Saint Petersburg
Saint Petersburg is Russia's second largest city, with a population of 4.7 million perched at the eastern tip of of the Baltic Sea and the Neva River. The city was formerly known as Petrograd (Петроград), and later Leningrad (Ленинград).
Founded by Peter the Great, the former home of the Czars and the center of Russian culture, Saint Petersburg was known as "The Venice of the North" in its heyday. Rechristened Petrograd during the first World War, the city was renamed Leningrad in 1924 in honor of the communist revolutionary, V.I. Lenin. Bombed, blockaded and starved during World War II, the city took a back seat to Moscow during the Soviet era.

Like dancing? Be sure to visit @ Metroclub, 174 Ligovsky Prospekt. 3 floor dance club and lot of good-looking russian girls and international people, too! You just can't stop girls surrounding you all the time, and why would you!

We took a train from Helsinki to St. Petersburg. The trip takes a few hours but is definitely one of the best train experiences I've had. The athmosphere was that of old times with curtains and white textile tablecloths in the restaurant car. And the food was proper russian food with a soup starter and a beer on the side. Happy traveling! :-)
Oh btw. make sure you take the russian train Repin. The finnish train Sibelius is just a normal train with no added eastern ambience.

I know that many people hate cabbage, but I also know that they haven't tasted cabbage soup in Russia! It was my appetizer in one restaurant in St Petersburg (but I can't remember the name of it) and I really loved it! Never have tasted so delicious soup! Slurps.

There is everything that you need to spend your time in a cultural nightlife! But everyone has to remember that those bridges in the town really open after midnight one at the time! So you have to plan earlier how to get back :)

The town is absolutely on of the most beautiful and amazing towns I’ve ever visited in Europe. Everything is huge. Try circus, pantomime theatre, river trip in Neva, shopping in the local market, take an unofficial taxi from Nevskii Prospekt. Live in a hotel in which all the rooms are different.

If you plan to visit Hermitage, reserve the whole day for it. Been there 3 times and still haven't seen anything. It's incredible!

Usually I think it's a waste of time to go to the museums. I hate art and history! Hermitage really changed my mind, because words almost failed me there. Museum is huge, so you can visit only a small part of it in one day. But it was really worth seeing, because I was running out of time, and that is totally unusual for me in a MUSEUM!

I'm not so keen on history, but Hermitage museum is an enjoyable way to get to know Russian's history and cultural. There you almost forget that you are in a museum, because there are so many special things to see...over 3,000,000 items! In my opinion, the most interesting collection of the museum is The treasure Gallery, where gold and diamonds are the main points.

This is also one of the enormous landmarks of Russia! As I have said many times, I don't really enjoy visiting historical and cultural places...including churches! But this cathedral is different, it's grand. When you have an possibility to visit St Petersburg, spare enough time, because there are so many awesome places to see.

If visiting Saint Petersburg, you should make a day trip to Peterhof, Peter the Great's summer residence. It's a magnificent place!

By far the most beautiful city in Europe. Good restaurants and night life. Expensive!
satuandersson1 from Finland wrote about Church of the Savior on Blood 4 years, 5 months ago
One of the must-see sights in St Petersburg. The church was built with tax money from all of Russia. Hence the name. It's more fabulous on the outside than on the inside. And the queues are looong...
