"The site of the future city of Portland, Oregon was known to American, Canadian, and English traders, trappers and settlers of the 1830s and early 1840s as "The Clearing," a small stopping place along the west bank of the Willamette River used by travellers en route between Oregon City and Fort Vancouver."

"Portland's location, with access both to the Pacific Ocean via the Willamette and the Columbia rivers and to the agricultural Tualatin Valley via the "Great Plank Road" through a canyon in the West Hills (the route of current-day U.S. Highway 26 ), gave it an advantage over nearby ports, and it grew quickly."

I got the opportunity to visit Portland for a friends wedding and fell in love with it. The city is pretty fun to romp around and visit, but the coolest parts were just to the east. The Columbia River basin is breath-taking and the Multnomah and Horsetail falls are spectacular.
