What is Lappeenranta
City of Lappeenranta (population 60,000) is the economic and cultural center of southeast Finland situated at the southern edge of the Saimaa, the largest lake (system) of Finland. Its culture and dialects are strongly part of Eastern Finland, although it administratively belongs to the Province of Southern Finland. Lappeenranta has a colourful, over 350-year-old history between the east and the west.

One of the seven wonders of Finland is Lemi's särä, a local pot roast of potatoes and mutton. It is cooked in the särä, from which the dish gets its name, a sort of long, wooden trough. The local village museum serves original Lemi's särä in authentic environment.

I've never stayed here but have had lunch in the beautiful salon. The building is very beautiful all around and perhaps one of the two good things about Imatra. The other one is the Imatra Dam.

Saimaa Lake is best enjoyed by boat. There are day cruises departing from Savonlinna, Lappeenranta, Puumala. You can also make half day trips between these places (including Kuopio further north). There are beautiful landscapes all over, but from the roads - when travelling by car - you can hardly get a glimpse because of the trees and the road network being oriented to reach villages in the inland. In addition to day cruises, here are some top options for enjoying Saimaa: canoeing (start from Oravi, Savonlinna), rowing (Sulkava rowing race 2 weekend of July every year or Norppasoutu event in Savonlinna), rent a motor boat (best rental in Savonlinna), drive the scenic roads (Ruokolahti-Sulkava-Puumala-Mikkeli and Punkaharju), in winter drive the ice roads on lake ice across Pihlajavesi archipelago south of Savonlinna, you can also try snowmobiles, skiing on lake ice and last but not least trip skating in Rantasalmi and Oravi
