Kerimäki church, hot or not?
What is Kerimäki church
Designed by Anders Granstedt and built between 1844 and 1847, the church has a length of 45 metres, a width of 42 meters, a height of 37 metres and a seating capacity of more than 3,000. Altogether there can be 5,000 people at a time in the church.
It has been rumoured that the size of the church was the result of a miscalculation when it was built (supposedly the architect was working in centimeters, which the builder took to be inches, which are 2.54 times larger). Further studies, however, have shown that the church was actually intended to be as big as it is, so it could easily accommodate a half of the area's population at the same time.
During wintertime, services are held in a smaller "winter church" (built in 1953), since the main building has no heating.

In Kerimäki there is nothing except for this biggest wooden church. It's ok for a church and worth visiting if you're driving by for some reason. Don't bother traveling here for this reason only, though.

...update: not the _only_ reason.
Savonlinna also hosts annual opera festivals, in the castle, though. The surrounding lake country is also breath-takingly beautiful. Take a daytrip to punkaharju as well.

Perhaps the coolest medieval castle in Finland and definitely the best guided tours. One might even say that Olavinlinna is the only reason to go to Savonlinna and definitely worth the visit if you're close by.

Incredibly beautiful nature surrounded by lakes. Not to be missed.

The Savonlinna Opera Festival proved to be a much better experience than I anticipated. The Olavinlinna castle provides excellent premises and the atmosphere is relaxed.
Savonlinna is a nice city. :-)

The Vuorilinna summer hotel is a good bang for the buck kind of place to stay. Our room was spartan but spacious and the location is excellent. And didn't cost much.

A local girl recommended this bar for us so we went to check it out - and were happy that we did. The DJ played good music varying from YUP to The Doors to smooth jazz rhythms. At least on a summer saturday packed with young people.

If you haven't already been there, make sure you don't miss Summer 2010 exhibition. During 3.6.-29.8.2010 they display the beautiful works of Helene Schjerfbeck and her sister artists.
