What is Kauai
Kauai (or, more properly, Kaua'i) is the northwesternmost and oldest of Hawaii's major islands. Called the Garden Island, it is covered with lush greenery and tropical plants, watered regularly by abundant rainfall. As the oldest of the islands, it has been changed the most by the forces of erosion, and this has resulted in natural wonders such as Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali Coast. It is also home to more sandy beaches than any other major island in the Hawaiian chain.

About Kauai

On two trips I have tried diving here, with only one success due to heavy winds. The drift diving over old volcano flows was highlighted by a female white-tipped shark who was freshly mated by two males. There was another very rare highlight which our dive master / underwater biologist pointed out, but that detail left my brain long ago.
More to the original point, the seas were rough from the wind... and nary a sole on the boat avoided throwing up.
It's rare and beautiful underneath, but try to plan around Mother Nature who works her way up top.

Were you afraid of those sharks? I think they are quite scary! :)

Kauai, unlike Oahu, is much slower paced, quiet, and beautiful! We've been here four times now and haven't gotten tired of it! There are lots of different beaches to explore and some of the best snorkeling! I recommend Ke'e, Tunnels, or Poipu beach for snorkeling. If you want to try surf lessons I recommend you go to Hanalei. There is no reef to worry about cutting yourself on, like Poipu, and the waves are pretty gentle. If you are into hiking, check out beautiful Waimea canyons! On a clear day you'll get some awesome view of the Na Pali coast! If you are adventurous and want a more challenging hike, the Kalalau Trail at the end of Ke'e beach is worth a try! You must wear hiking boots and socks, or you will regret it, like myself! I wore Teva sandals and by the end of our day I suffered two big broken blisters and a swollen right foot for five days! Although the hike is hard and rugged, the beach and waterfall were well worth the agony I suffered! Bring plenty of water and snacks and start early in the morning! You'll get the most awesome view of the Na Pali coast and the waterfall cascades 300 feet and the you'll feel exhilerated swimming underneath the waterfall!!

Best snorkeling is at Ke'e,Tunnels or Poipu Beach. Best surfing lessong are at Hanalei. Best souvenier shopping is at Wal mart, Costco, the swap meet in Kapaa, and the vendors at Spouting Horn.

We stayed in the Grand Hyatt and couldn't have been happier. It was quite unbelievable. Can't wait to go back.
