What is Joshua Tree National Park
Joshua Tree National Park is a United States National Park that is located in the Southern California Desert of the United States of America. The park encompasses nearly 800,000 acres of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts, conserving two separate desert ecosystems at different altitudes. The name of the park is derived from the distinctive Joshua Tree, a tall-growing variety of the yucca genus that grows prevalently within its boundaries.

A fantastic desert hiking destination. Great views, dramatic Joshua trees and great oases for staying overnight. Just bring plenty of water as it get really, really hot.

I spent a week in Joshua Tree last January (2008) and had the most amazing time. Solitude of a very particular quality and a great variety of hikes... Boulder scrambling at Indian Cove (my profile pic is from that hike), 49 Palms Oasis (go early, it's popular) both in the north. Cottonwood Springs in the south... Too many to list. Go there!

A wonderful diverse desert atmosphere with alienlike shrubs and landscapes moving past you in a slow legato as you keep driving along! Then get off the car, close your eyes, and get bedazzled by utter silence.
After a short drizzle the ground will instantly be covered by zillions of minuscule, brightly colored flowers. But they'll vanish just as rapidly as they have appeared.

High desert area with Colorado desert type of vegetation. Lots of Joshua Trees and occasional Pinyon Pines. It got really hot here and there's no water in sight in the northern parts we visited. The national park brochure said that many rock climber come here to climb and we actually saw two guys with climbing gear going towards the Grand Burrito formation...
