About Jamaica elsewhere

"They were displaced around A.D. 600 by the Arawak, Indians who originated in northern South America (probably in the area of modern Guyana)."
frommers.com

"Originally peopled by peace-loving Arawak Indians, "discovered" by Columbus in 1494, ruled by the Spanish for a century and a half and then by the British for the next 300 years, Jamaica is a land where history lies deep."
nationalgeographic.com

"Columbus landed here in 1494, and the Spanish soon brought in slaves as the native Arawak Indians died out—today more than 90 percent of the population is of African descent."

The zipline through the trees sounds cool, but it's actually a lot of walking in very tight and uncomfortable straps. Not sure I'd recommend it :)

When staying in Ochie consider visiting Nine Mile, the birthplace of Bob Marley. He is currently laid to rest there.

If your ship is docked to the pier, and you walk that long road into town - you'll realize you are in a foreign country that is by some considered a third world country. Just remember the only beer you can buy is Red Stripe - and you can usually get one from the "people standing on the road to town" - usually for $3 or $5 a beer.

When you first disembark your cruise ship and start down the 500 or so feet to the main road in Ocho Rios, there are 2 fine shopping centers just as you get to it. Island Village with Margaritaville is on the right and another nice one is right across the street. Then as you head left on the main road, you go more and more into the 3rd ( I'd say 2nd) world environment, but all of the shops are decent and there's usually only a few scammers around and they're easily shoo'd off with the threat of calling one of the many officers on the street. Heinekin is also available because surprisingly it's brewed in Jamaica! John Crow is a nice outdoor pub to sit in, relax, drink $3 red stripes and watch the shenanigans on the road.
