What is Halifax

Halifax is the capital city of Nova Scotia and the largest city in the Atlantic Provinces of Canada. The city's origins and rich maritime history derive from a strategic location and one of the world's great natural harbours. In the 19th and early 20th century, Halifax was the entry point for European immigration to Canada. Today, Halifax is a busy Atlantic seaport and the economic and cultural hub of Eastern Canada.

There are usually great food deals down by the waterfront especially during the summer. When I was there they had a $1 steak/fries special. I had to try it, and it was as advertised. Now of course the Canadian beer cost a bit more that rounded out my tab! :)

Halifax was one of the first places that we visited and got the "wow this place is pretty cool, I bet Europe is even cooler!!" thoughts. Good shopping and eats. The main attraction for me was the touring the fort.

Hostelling is very easy here and very affordable. I'd recommend it highly. We stayed at Heritage House, and loved it. Very clean city, we weren't here for too long, but we were here for the International Busker Festival (busquers?), which is August 7 - 17th this year (2008), and it's AMAZING. Definitely worth checking out if you're remotely close.

Oh and drive into Halifax (about a twenty minute drive) and park at the Fort. They have a bus that will take you around the city and you can pick it up on the half hour. Very convenient. Just be sure to catch that last bus!
