Just to add to Caryatid's post, it is possible to cross the Pak-Afg border at Chaman/Spin Boldak, about 3 hours from Quetta, but a permit is needed from the Balochistan provincial government to travel the road between Quetta & Chaman which isn't as easy to get as the Khyber pass permit, so it's not an easily viable option.
