What is Funchal
Funchal is the capital of the island of Madeira. Situated in the south between Santa Cruz and Camara de Lobos cities. Funchal has an abundance of good, if not necessarily cheap, eating places. Most places serve traditional Madeiran and Portuguese food, which is well-prepared and well-tasting, but not terribly exciting.

Nice place, at least I liked a lot. Maybe some hills too many. You will be in trouble without your feet.

Madeira has about a 1000 km of concrete irrigation channels, which practically run level. They serve as scenic routes for hiking, with a view of the sea on the other side and mountains on the other. The routes go through little villages and through dense forests. I can highly recommend checking this little Atlantic island out.

Camara de Lobos is within walking distance from Funchal - even closer if your hotel is on the western side - but it´s a world apart! Even today, it´s basically a fishing town, and the oldest part, close to the harbour, is very scenic.
