What is Easter Island

Discovered on Easter Sunday, 1722 by Dutch explorer Jakob Roggeveen. Easter island's collection of 25 meter-high stone sculptures still puzzles historians and archaeologists as to its origins. It is believed that a society of Polynesian origin settled here in the 4th century and established a unique tradition of monumental sculpture. Between the 10th and 16th centuries, they erected the enormous stone figures, known as the Moai, which have long fascinated the entire world and endowed this island with a mythical atmosphere.

Perhaps surprisingly, you can really eat well on Easter Island. They make very delicate gourmet dishes from fresh fish.

There are a lot of cows, horses and bulls (BIG ones) on the loose as someone mentioned, so be careful when wandering about the island without the locals. There are a lot of cats and dogs too, and at least the ones in the "city" are tame and friendly.

Easter Island is breathtakingly beautiful, would be worth visiting even without the statues. In most things you read about the islands, it is mostly about the statues, and after going there I felt the incredible beauty of the land and the surrounding sea really deserve more attention.

Watch out : there is not car insurance on the island. In case of an accident, you are responsible for all the damages ! And it is pretty common to see cows and horses jumping right in front of your vehicle. Respecting the speed limit (60) and keeping his eyes wide open is a good way to prevent accidents that can be deadly !

Anywhere on this island is great. Seeing the Moai statues all over the place. Amazing. Swimming is good but where we went there wasnt much to see snorkling wise.

Hire a moped - brilliant. And go to Orongo after it closes but in time for sunset. Surely one of the most cosmic places on earth. And ace when it is quiet and it is just you and a few others.
