What is Cozumel
Cozumel is a Caribbean island just off the Yucatan Peninsula in southeastern Mexico. It has great beaches and safe nice people, but is more expensive than other destinations in Mexico. It was badly battered in 2005 by Hurricane Wilma, but has since been almost entirely repaired.

"Other advice would be don't even think of buying any beer, water, or ice cream or other staples anywhere on the beach or anywhere close to the touristy 5th Ave. in Playa del Carmen -items cost more there than in the US. MERIDA & UXMAL: In Merida, Hotel Montejo was ok, but a bit mosquitoey and run-down for the price."
lonelyplanet.com
"How to get there By air from Mexico City in about 2.5 hours, Mérida in about 40 minutes, Cancún in about 15 minutes; also from other Mexican and U.S. airports; by ferry from Playa del Carmen (passenger ferry) in about 1 hour or Puerto Aventuras (car ferry) in about 2 hours."

"Cozumel ( Mayan : Island of the Swallows )( Kùutsmil in Modern Maya )is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico 's Yucatán Peninsula ,opposite Playa del Carmen."

"Alternatively, you can fly into Cancun (Airport Code: CUN )which generally has more flights, then take a bus or van south to Playa del Carmen and take the ferry across to Cozumel."
wikitravel.org
"Playa del Carmen is filled with resorts -- some of them all-inclusive -- that are as glitzy and hectic as those in Cancún and Cozumel, embodying the coast's vida loca (crazy life)."
fodors.com
"Mayan Riviera -the stretch of coastline between Cancun and Tulum (which includes Playa del Carmen ), it is a quickly-developing resort area that still maintains a relaxed atmosphere in contrast to the city of Cancun."
wikitravel.org
"Worst: June-Oct [wet, hot]; the Yucatan Peninsula is susceptible to hurricanes during this season but even if the big H doesn't strike the seas around may be rough and unclear, the skies cloudy and the beaches [Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen etc.] less pleasant to hang out on, though prices will be down."

About Cozumel

Cozumel is one of my favorite destination locations! A boat ride directly across the water from popular Cancun, Cozumel presents a more relaxing destination. With more focus on relaxing white sand beaches, with crystal clear water while sipping ice cold drinks; Cozumel provides it all. This is also a site for some great scuba diving on coral reefs. With great reefs nearby, and shore dives aplenty Cozumel leaves divers with that happy grin at the end of a great day. Don't forget to try the fresh seafood while here!

A bit trendy in Playa del Carmen, but the Mayan Riviera around it is a lot of fun.
