Cairns is an excellent basecamp from where you can go see the Great Barrier Reef and the Kuranda rainforest area. The town itself is not too interesting but you can find all the services conveniently: train to Kuranda, boat to the reef, car rental to hire your own wheels, etc...

I'd recommend going on a Cape Tribulation tour with Tropical Horizons Tours. Great personalised service and informative tour guides.

We took the historic train from Cairns to Kuranda. It was an excellent journey! The railway zigzags through the rainforest and by the waterfalls and provides a view to the Barron Gorge etc.

Stayed at the Peppers Resort, LOVED it. Really friendly staff, great room with a view and out door spa on the patio, food was delish. Definitely worth the 5 star reputation.
