Funky hotel in the heart of SoHO. Rooftop bar with 360-views to Manhattan.
Restaurant (Kittichai) serves very nice Asian cuisine.
Doesn't come cheap, though. Rates vary from USD 300-600 per night.

jussi

jussi from Finland wrote about Historic Downtown New York 4 years, 10 months ago

The historic downtown is where New York began originally but the downtown has been remarkable also afterwards. It was fun to visit the Ellis Island where the immigrants from Finland arrived on their way to a better future. We saw items from Finland as well as signs in finnish in the museum. And of course the iconic Liberty Island is great to see, not least because of the great view to the Manhattan skyline.

Coney Island is a white-trash hangout. Its much more interesting in the nearby Brighton Beach (or: Little Odessa) where the NYC's Russian community resides. There's tons of authentic Russian restaurants etc. in the area.

paavo

Not good value for money at all. The rooms I've stayed (3 separate rooms) all had bad air. The more inexpensive ones were actually nicer; junior-suite I stayed in was absolutely of horrible value. The hotel was decorated sometimes in the nineties.
The breakfast sets you back for about USD35 but may be worth it. Includes a fantastic omelette. Other quite positive thing is the fitness-center on the top-floor.

The Apollo Theater is a landmark in Harlem. An Apollo Hall was founded in NY in the mid-1860s by former Civil War General Edward Ferrero as a dance hall and ballroom. Today the location is mainly associated with African-American music and was the location that launched many careers of many popular African-American artist.

Martsu

Martsu from Finland wrote about Stand UP NY 4 years, 6 months ago

A great place to enjoy stand up in New York city is the stand up ny comedy club in the 236 west 78th street. Tickets to the club are 15-20 dollars per person and there is a two drink minimum. Drinks are about 10 dollars each but there are also some offers like a bucket of beers 45 dollars. There are people selling tickets half price to the club on the time square, and it's safe to buy also from them. The 20 dollars is a money well spend from a fun night.

Martsu

Martsu from Finland wrote about Times Square 4 years, 6 months ago

When visiting New York a musical or a theatre show is a must. Tickets to Broadway shows are normaly about 100-120 dollars. But there are also places to buy tickets to the same day show for half price, for example the TKTS booth in time square. In weekends you will find the booth from it's enormous lines. They start to sell the tickets to the same days shows at to pm.

Martsu

Martsu from Finland wrote about Royal Park Hotel and Hostel 4 years, 6 months ago

The accomodation in NY is most likely the most expensive part of your trip. In NY a good hostel normaly better than a poor hotel. Royal park hotel and hostel has the great location just of Broadway in 97th street. The nearest subway is just in the corner. I recommend booking a room with ensuite facilities. The public areas, shared toilets and the rooms with shared bathrooms are not renovated. The rooms don't seem to be very safe either. The rooms with own bathrooms are much better in standard. lot bigger and not that much more expensive.

If you´re in New York, you should definitely go to see the Statue of Liberty. The statue was the present from French people to American people when the country became independent. There are lots of tourists around the statue taking pictures. It´s a little bit difficult to get the whole statue on the picture, because of its height.

I went to visit a friend over spring break one year. We traveled to the City for 2 days and I got to see some of it, but not all. New York is so huge that it takes much more time to visit all the hot spots. It was a bit underwhelming for me. It's just a big city. Although, I'm so glad I got to see the Brooklyn Bridge in person. It's legendary. One big tip, I guess, is that if you don't want to pay to take the ferry to Liberty Island, the Staten Island ferry is free and you get close to the statue on your way there.
