About Asia elsewhere

"Modern Singapore dates its nascency from the early morning of January 29, 1819, when a representative of the British East India Company, Thomas Stamford Raffles, stepped ashore at Singa Pura (Sanskrit for "Lion City"), as the island was then called, hoping to establish a British trading settlement on the southern part of the Malay Peninsula."

"The British had first established a presence in the Straits of Melaka (now called Malacca) in the 18th century, when the East India Company set out to secure and protect its line of trade from China to the colonies in India."

"The British East India Company, in its rivalry with the Dutch East Indies Company, sought to control the Strait of Malacca, the narrow passage between Indonesian Sumatra and the Malay peninsula."

"Madras was one of the first outposts of British East India Company."
wikitravel.org

"In 1826 Singapore Penang and Malacca were combined as the Straits Settlements to form an outlying residency of the British East India Company; in 1867 the Straits Settlements were made a British Crown Colony an arrangement that continued until 1946."

You can go diving in the Underwater World oceanarium if you book ahead. Excellent experience to dive with sharks, stingrays, dugong and various other fishes.

The Singapore Zoo's night tour is unlike any other Zoo I have been to in the world. Lions, Male Elephants. Its a great experience.

If you want to have your own space on the beach, skip this Island on weekends. It's packed!

jjlaine

jjlaine from Finland wrote about Sentosa 4 years, one month ago

Sentosa has to offer many family activities which were a bit too artificial for me. I just wanted to have a beach with warm water, not too many sunworshippers and a view to the horizon with thousands of massive frighters. That's the Siloso Beach!

Chinese food on Temple Street is great. Try "steam boat buffet", a big bowl of spicy broth where you cook your choice of meat and veggies. Great:)

thevalkyriekid
thevalkyriekidloves Singapore because Singapore is the world's most orderly city. They have signs in the bathrooms threatening you with $25 fines for not flushing. You wonder how will they know?

A really nice biz level hotel with direct access to Raffles City Shopping Centre. The original Raffles Hotel right next door for your Long Bar Gin slings!

Orchard street for electronics is a must.

huipengkeh

It's actually Sim Lim (near Bugis area) that one should go for electronic goods, you'll get ripped off along Orchard Road.

Planet Holiday Hotel was pretty reasonable ($70US) and very nice, close to shopping and excellent eating. The city itself is a bit seedy and has dangerous areas, but if you exercise caution it's a decent off-beat visit.

waldemar

waldemar from USA wrote about Turi Beach Resort 4 years, 9 months ago

Well-appointed grass hut on the beach, nice pools, great food and service. (More hotel-like accommodations also available.) Prices on the high side for Indonesia but reasonable for NA visitors. Weekdays it's lovely and quiet - we were told the weekends are on the hectic side. The main negative was the aggressive mosquitoes - be sure to bring the Deet.

yannmau

yannmau from France wrote about Ritz Carlton 4 years, 8 months ago

nice room, great views, large swimming pool, gentle service

jjlaine

jjlaine from Finland wrote about Singapore Flyer 4 years, 8 months ago

Costs you about $30 per adult. The 30 minutes ride can be ordered with drinks and service too. I thought it was worth it. You just have to decide if youll take it day- or nighttime. The city lights are on their best when the sun is setting.

raymond

raymond from Australia wrote about Orchard 4 years, 7 months ago

the way to stay cool and avoid the humid weather in singapore is to move from one shopping center to another.

jjlaine

jjlaine from Finland wrote about Singapore 4 years, one month ago

On my way to Australia I had a refreshing stop in Singapore to see some Finnish friends. The whole trip idea was to stay away from the hotels and couchsurf to the limits!

The photo is from the 15th floor balcony in River Valley. The climate was constant +31C days and nights. I didn't even see any rain showers although people were sure I would get wet every day.

I liked the SP Zoo a LOT! It had something from about every continent. The environment felt also very real, rural and real jungle-like. The over-acted rainforest saving cabarees were a bit too much though! :S

My favourites were the giraffes and mini-hippo. BLUB BLUB.
