What is Elat
Eilat (aka Elat) is an oddity in Israel, because it has so many tourists and relatively few Israelis. Located at the southern-most tip of the country, within its small "window on the Red Sea", Eilat is first and foremost a resort town these days, devoted to sun, fun, diving, partying and desert-based activities. 320 km (200 miles) away from the tension often felt in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem, Eilat is a convenient escape for Israelis on vacation, but during the mild winter months also attracts thousands of European sun-seekers.

From the border town of Aqaba to Petra will cost you about 120usd in a Taxi. This is by far the faster although the most expensive way to get to Petra from the border. We just took the trip and really enjoyed the Taxi ride. We passed many tour buses and minivans.

An ok apartment hotel with a nice pool and a small shopping center. Very close to the beach but then again so is everything in Eilat. Lots of families with kids.

Perhaps the best price to quality ratio in Eilat. All the restaurants are pretty expensive but not very good. This one is perhaps one of the cheapest and the food is ok and portions are pretty big.
I'd still eat at Burger King which is very close by. :)

Coral Beach is a nice private beach in Eilat where you can go snorkeling on the reef to see some fish and other interesting stuff. It's not diving but still quite fun. It costs 30 NIS to get in but the bonus is that there's a fence around the beach. :)

There's a really tall flagpole in Aqaba that you can see from a long distance. Not worth it to cross the border for it but if you're going to do that anyway then definitely stop by. You can see it from the Israeli side and you think it's big but once you're next to it you realize it is huge.
