What is Venice
Venice , Italy (Venezia in Italian) is still one of the most interesting and lovely places in the world. This sanctuary on a lagoon is virtually the same as it was five hundred years ago, which adds to the fascinating character. Venice has certainly begun to decay since its heyday and is heavily touristed (there are slightly more tourists than residents)-- but the romantic charm remains.

To me, Venice has been at its best outside the tourist season (surprise?). One of my favorite cities even though there isn't much to do during night time. Walking around on the narrow streets and alleys and taking a vaporetto to the nearby islands on a chilly, sunny day lets one remember the world like it was in Hemingway's books...

Exactly. I wouldn't go there again with my parents again. They just want to see the usual sights. Alternative Venice is much better!

Go to Bacaro Jazz Venice! Coolest place in the city: Restaurant & Cocktail Bar open (including kitchen) until 2 AM at night; since Venice it's a pretty quite city in terms of nightlife, the Bacaro Jazz (Jazz Bar in Venitian dialect) definitely add some spice to the city!

What's the best thing you can do in Venice after nightfall?
Take the euronight train to Budapest. Traveling through Trieste, Ljubljana in Slovenia and Zagreb, Croatia, it takes you to the beautiful Lake Balaton in Hungary and eventually to its capital, Budapest.
Be reminded that while the train actually leaves Schengen area so you'll be waken up some six times a night with the annoying wake up calls like "passport control".

In Venice sometimes it pays to visit out of the way places to dine. I went to San Giacomo Square located not too far from the main train station. While enjoying dinner kids were playing soccer in the square and late a group of dance school students came out and practiced. Nice to see the real city in action.

A day at Venice was a bit too little. We didn't even make it to the St. Marcus Square in the given time.
From Venice we got to the Venice Express, a night train to Budapest, Hungary via Slovenia and Croatia. What it basically meant was you are woken up six times per night with and angry call "passport control".

You have to pack with goods in the Venice Express as there is no restaurant car in the train. There is no lock or key for the door either so you must stay in your cabin for the duration of the trip.

Venice is very beautiful city and worth visiting while it still exists... I wouldn't like to spend a week in here because there's many beautiful cities in northen Italy. You need time and money in Venice, and be prepared to queue everywhere because there's so much tourists. I didn't even dream about getting into any museums when I saw the crowds. The city is also a bit smelly, and first you can see a beautiful rose floating by, and the next second, a dead rat. And if you're afraid of pigeons, forget it.

During the summertime it's crowded with tourists and street sellers. One nice way to get around is to use the vaporetto water buses even though they are pretty expensive. Restaurants are rather expensive along the main streets but you can find some nice ones off the high street.

Venice is indeed in many ways disappointing. On the other hand, there are lots of interesting historic places like the dungeons tour. If you want the most out of Venice, stay clear of the tourist sights and wonder around the more quiet streets.
My best experience in Venice was definitely in December during a particularly high tide when St. Marcus square was completely filled with water and I was able to walk in the middle of it with plastic bags over my shoes.
I'd also recommend visiting the parks in the South-East corner of Venice.

The ONLY way to see the Grand Canal is by a vaporetto water bus. Buy a day ticket and while you're at it, visit the nearby islands as well.

So true! Vaporetto is also the fastest way to travel in Venice. Of the nearby islands, my favorite is Burano. It's easy to reach with a vaporetto.

The grandest of the canals. The grand canal is always busy and if you're in a horry it is the fastest way to get from one place to another without getting lost. The nicest places (piazzas, restaurants, etc.) are not by Canale Grande but around the smaller canals and alleys.

Casa Fornaretto was a nice place to stay, and cheap if you compare to other Venetian hotels, but the breakfast was a joke and the beds were a bit too hard for my back to handle.
