What is Åre

Åre is a well-known ski resort in Jämtland, Sweden, approximately 80 km from the city of Östersund. The ski lift system is on the Åreskutan mountain with its highest peak at a height of 1420 meters, but the highest lift ends at 1260 meters, so the peak has to be reached by a snowmobile lift. The village and ski area are accessible by bus and train. The nearest airport is Åre Östersund Airport.

A ski resort during winter time. An excellent combination of Laplandish nature and almost Alps-like slopes!

One of the best ski resorts in Scandinavia in terms of slopes, they also have a nice spa in the valley. After ski is pretty good too.

Åreskutan. Skiing is great, if it´s open. The micro climate often brings in rain, fog and winds making the gondola lift to close all too often. Instead, try Tväråvalvet which has boring T-bar lifts but the slopes are quite steep and nicely groomed.

Fine cuisine dining at Marmite in Åre. Quite expensive but one of those places you go to a few times a year. Not more.

Are there any direct flights to Åre besides from Kaustrup, Copenhagen? We're thinking of visiting åre during easter 2009 but with 3 months old baby a flight connection is a must.

How about a direct Finnair flight from Helsinki to Åre? That was our choice back in 2007. The flight actually goes to Östersund, which is the nearest airport in Åre. It still takes about one hour from the airport to the Åre village. Remember to try some cross country skiing in Åre.

Congrats for the new member in your family! :-)
