What is Åland

Åland (Finnish: Ahvenanmaa) is a small archipelago between Sweden and Finland. While legally a part of Finland, in practice the islands run their own affairs and are rather different from the mainland.

About Åland elsewhere

"The Åland Islands (pronounced "Oh-lahnd") are a group of small islands officially belonging to Finland but awarded a wide degree of autonomy by a League of Nations decision in 1921 that settled a long-running dispute between Sweden and Finland."
wikitravel.org

"Don't get me wrong, I really like ?land as it is a very beautiful place and it's nice to have that variation within my country, but I approve the idea of ?land's autonomy only after Helsinki stops feeding them money and ?land can operate on its own, or at least with the same level of public subsidies as other provinces with the same economical situation."
lonelyplanet.com

"The council decided unanimously, that the islands would remain under Finland's sovereignty ,but stated that the native population's rights to their own language had to be preserved, that the area had to stay demilitarized and that Åland was granted autonomy during peace time."
en.wikipedia.org

"Finland has always recognized the islands' autonomy and indeed has extended it: for example the Åland Islands now issue their own stamps."
planetware.com

"As Ã…landers still wanted to revert to integration into Sweden and were not unduly beguiled by Finnish offers of autonomy, the question was referred to the League of Nations who determined that Finland should retain sovereignty but that Ã…land should be autonomous, monolingual [Swedish only, unlike the mainland of Finland which is bilingual, both Finnish and Swedish being official languages] and completely demilitarised."
world66.com

"Prior to autonomy, an unofficial horizontal bicolour triband of blue-yellow-blue was in use."

On a sunny summer´s day, this island group i three-coloured: blue skies and waters, nearly black rock, lush green juniper and grass. A short ferry ride from Korpo or main Aland takes you there, and today you can find good accomodation - but be sure to book in advance if you plan to go in July or August! And if you want to hear the whining of the wings of time, take a walk to the Otterbote bronze age settlement, where the hut foundations are still clearly visible!

If you happened to take a tent with you, this is the place for you. It costs only about 6 euros per night. You can also rent a cabin, but I have never slept in those, so don't know about them. The only minus in this place is that sometimes there are security guards who make sure that people don't make noice after midnight. But then you can always move to the citys' bars to party :D

I really enjoy staying in archipelago and Maarianhamina is one of the most beautiful resorts. So peaceful, but at the same time you have an opportunity to do so many things. But that's almost only in the summer time, in the winter it is the same that it is everywhere in Finland: so few things to do and you get bored :(

This hotel/restaurant is a match made in heaven if you like disco, social dancing (bugg), dining and young and elder people in the same venue. I discovered the magic of social dancing this spring and I travelled to Maarianhamina because of the fine dance they organize there. Three D's: dance, drinks, disco!

kirsikka
kirsikkaloves Kastelholm Castle because Right by Kastelholm there are two truly fine 18-hole golf courses. After golf try delicious snails at local 'snail yard', ALANDIA ESCARGOTS Ab close to the castle .
